I am 5 years in to a loving relationship with my feet.
I abused my feet my whole life.
Too small shoes.
Too high heels.
Mortons neuroma, multiple ankle sprains, bunions.
Not once did my feet let me down.
My body screamed. But my feet kept me going in spite of the searing pain from the neuroma. It carried on. I could and do cry. For all the times I ignored the symptoms and kept on and not once did my body let me down.
When you become aware of how much the body does for you daily let alone weekly, monthly, seasonally, yearly, over a lifetime and how little we actually listen to it let alone do for it and it’s requirements you sort of grow this reverence.
When you begin to understand what the body requires but doesn’t get from us yet still keeps on, you begin to expand your compassion and allow the symptoms some space to be until you realise it is you and your life that has to change to allow the change in symptoms/expression.
Symptoms are literally that. Symptoms of you in your life. That’s the bit we forget. We think that symptoms are the labels, the diagnoses, the things we need to fight or change. Symptoms are the direct result of you in your life and no more than that, no less. It is you who needs to change not your symptoms. They'll keep on until you change.
They are YOU. They are your body talking to YOU. Telling you everything you need to know about everything.
My foot symptoms got to a point where I couldn’t ignore them any longer and so I shifted. I stopped doing the things I knew were giving me pain and spent as much time as I could barefoot to allow more space as I realised that is the thing I wasn't giving my feet.
I started to give my feet more attention with my eyes, hands and brain and when I could afford to buy barefoot shoes I did and I wore them every day until any other shoe didn’t feel right.
I moved my feet, I touched them, I played with them and experimented with what they could do until it became second nature to be in/with my feet every day even with the symptoms.
I didn’t stop. I still do it. It’s a habit that I don’t want to and can’t shift because what I feel now is a connection so big I am curious to expand further.
And so I have.
I started wearing grounding sandals by EarthRunners at the beginning of April and I haven’t taken them off. We’ve been on beaches, in forests, on waterfalls, at festivals. In cold and warm. Constant exposure. We’ve danced and sung and climbed. The connection grows stronger and stronger.
Working with feet is not just something I picked up and did for a short period to get what I wanted and then left. It’s been a constant and daily remembrance of my connection with my Self and the earth we walk on.
The aim of the game with these body’s is to become increasingly aware of your Self. So aware that you are taking up all the space in your brain. When your Self is continuously expanding in your brain from constant exposure to your environment and experiences your body and Self feels safe. Especially if what you are exposing your Self to is your life then the connection is unshakeable.
If your brain has zero awareness of your feet in space and consequently your whole Self because they are on rubber soles and tightly bound with no range of motion then of course your brain will be asking questions and give you reasons to stop, look, listen, feel (symptoms).
Feet are just a peace of the puzzle when it comes to aiding your brain/body in the safety it requires in order to give you the freedom in life that you want symptom free but they’re a good place to start as less shoes is less money and no shoes is no money. But I don’t think society is ready for that just yet and probably won’t ever be the way fashions going. We are getting further and further away from the ground. Floating in space with no idea where we are.
Moving your feet is easy, it just takes patience, perseverance, peace and presence.
Just start by being barefoot more often and acknowledging the ground we walk upon, then expand.
It’s not enough just to wear barefoot shoes. You have to mean it too! It is a lifestyle not a trend.
